Osteoporosis is a disease of bones which increases the risk of fracture. Person with osteoporosis suffers cracks in the hip bones, backbone and wrist. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as, a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass (average of young, healthy adults) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
Type of osteoporosis
There are two types of Osteoporosis, type I and type II:
Type 1 Osteoporosis is very common problem in women after menopause and for this reason doctors’ advice pregnant women to specially take Calcium and Vitamin D. Pregnancy Osteoporosis referred to as primary type 1.
Type 2 Osteoporosis or senile osteoporosis occurs after age 75 and is seen in both females and males at a ratio of 2:1. Secondary osteoporosis may arise at any age and affect men and women equally.
Symptoms of Osteoporosis:
Osteoporosis itself has no symptoms. Osteoporotic fractures occur in situations where healthy people would not normally break a bone. A bone mineral density test is the best way to examine your bone health. This test can identify osteoporosis and tell you whether you are likely having a cracked bone or not.
Diagnosis of osteoporosis disease:
Radiography and measuring the bone mineral density (BMD) are the two simple tests for diagnosing osteoporosis. However, causes of osteoporosis are diagnosed by conducting blood tests and by asking patient’s history and what medications he have been on throughout his life and what was his life style. CT scan and MRI are conducted to detect this disease and the cortical thinning substantial amount of bone loss at early stages.
Osteoporosis is a public health problem that affects more than 25 millions in the USA alone. There are specific remedies available that can be used to prevent and treat early osteoporosis.
Exercises for osteoporosis:
Exercise is a good way to stay healthy. If you have always been active, it’s good for you. Even though your bones may lose density at the later age, it’s good for your bones because daily exercise built and maintains the amount and thickness of your bones.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the best exercises for building and maintaining bone density are:
·         Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, that makes you work against gravity while staying upright.
·         Muscle-strengthening exercise, such as weight lifting, that makes you work against gravity in a standing, sitting, or prone position.
Non impact activities such as balance, functional and posture exercises also may benefit people with osteoporosis. Although these exercises don't build or maintain bone density, they may increase muscle strength and decrease the risk of falls and fractures.
Treatment of osteoporosis:
Osteoporosis treatments include the “basic CDE’s” -- calcium(C), vitamin D (D), weight-bearing exercise (E), prevention of Falls (F), and bone-friendly medicines.
There are several medicines available in the market used to treat osteoporosis and your doctor will suggest these depending on the situation. Once the doctor will have your medical report after all of your tests, he will tell the current state of health of the bones and will recommend the Osteoporosis treatment accordingly.
